Heavy rain and strong winds

Freeze and thaw damage
Water that gets into brickwork or mortar joints expands when it freezes, widening any existing crack. Over repeated freeze-thaw cycles through a Bristol winter, small cracks become bigger ones — this is one of the main reasons chimney mortar deteriorates faster than the rest of a roof.
Erosion of mortar joints
Mortar is softer than brick, and it's designed to wear before the brick does — but constant exposure to rain gradually erodes the joints between bricks, known as pointing. Once pointing has eroded enough, water gets directly into the wall structure rather than running off it.
Storm damage
High winds during a storm can crack or dislodge chimney pots, damage flashing, and in serious cases destabilise the stack itself. This is exactly the kind of thing that turns a chimney that looked fine last month into an urgent repair after one bad night of weather.
The importance of regular inspections
Because weather damage builds up gradually and isn't always visible from the ground, a periodic inspection is the only reliable way to catch problems before they become serious. We'd recommend having a chimney checked every few years, or straight after any particularly bad storm.
